So here’s what happened...
I was sitting in the car trying to figure out some way to determine what could’ve gone wrong. So I said “Scheiße” and used the most Clarksonian method I could think of not involving a hammer. I just kept cranking the car. And I saw the tach bounce, but instead of the 1/16” bounce the needle should’ve moved, it moved all the way up to the 1000rpm mark.
WTF?? So I get out of the car, and remove the distributor and look at the rotor. It’s all good. As I put it back together, I walk to the interior, only to turn around and look at the contact wires on the coil, pull some random sandpaper I had in my pocket, and clean them up.
I then get back in the car and crank it again, it fires up, and idles at 3000rpm!! At first I was thinking vacuum leaks, so I turned it off and back on. I get walk out to the engine and look at the throttle cable, it’s caught on the weirdly shaped throttle cam which is holding it at that rpm. I get it untangled and it goes back to it’s originally set idle of 1050rpm.
So, yeah.

Your 944 seems to enjoy playing games like that with you.

Goodness yeah it does. Every day is a new game of Operation for her, Russian Roulette for me.

You might want to go through and clean up any electrical contacts you can think of now

I can't tell you which car is more of a sadist, your 944, or an FB RX-7.

I’ve driven both, but I’d say it’d be a damn close tie between the two.

I’ve been putting off contacts cleaning for some time now. Time to finally do that thing.

It’s basically mandatory on the 944. There are quite a few chassis grounds that you should clean up. Mine doesn’t really have much in the way of corrosion but it still made a noticeable difference in how quickly it started up. So far, I’ve been lucky with no weird electrical issues. I’m hoping my luck holds until I can rip out all the old junk and run the engine off a Megasquirt.
Glad it was a simple fix!

My old ‘74 Olds had a similar issue if it rained, it demanded to have the points in the cap rubbed or else it would deny me my 455 goodness.

At least for a little while.

As an owner of an RX8 and a 914 I’m pretty sure It’s a stalemate. I’m constantly fixing one to get it out of the garage to fix the other.

Every time my car acts weird I jiggle everything. It’s surprising how often that works.

I agree.

I know someone on Rennlist who’s running full megasquirt right now. He tells me it’s the best thing he’s done to his car, and I completely believe him. Megasquirt is the answer for these cars when our Motronic units fail!

I used to clean the battery contacts and grounds at least once a year. Otherwise, you run into all sorts of weird issues like you just solved.

Every time my fiancee acts weird, I try jiggling parts of her. That never works though.
